What is World Health Day?

World Health Day, celebrated every year of 7th April is a health awareness day observed by World Health Organization (WHO) and other related organization. In 1948, WHO organized the first-ever World Health Assembly and it was in the year 1950, the Health Assembly has declared that 7 April shall be observed as the International Health Day. And since then April 7th is being observed as Global Health Awareness Day.

What impact did observing this day make?

In more than five decades, this event has brought to light important health issues such as mental health, maternal and childcare, lifestyle diseases and many more. The celebration is marked by activities that increase beyond the day itself and serves as an opportunity to focus worldwide attention on these important aspects of global health. The aim of celebrating World Health Day is to build a fairer, healthier world for all of us and to raise of health theme and highlighting a priority area of concern for the WHO. And it was a success that many new areas were explored and the word Health defined by the WHO includes not only physical well-being but also social and mental well-being.   The scope of the word 'Health' has increased.

Exercise

Many people have a cliché mindset that exercise is just meant for weight loss but exercise has much more significance than that. It helps to fight a disease like- stroke, certain types of cancer, depression, blood pressure. Exercise helps in releasing endorphin and some brain chemicals which helps in feeling relaxed and happy.

Taking care of your mental health

We can’t neglect our mental health. It is as important as your physical health. Exercise, healthy food habit, sleeping, quitting smoking will help in reducing stress and for better mental health. Besides that, there are certain ways by which you can take care of your mental well-being. For example-

i) Get plenty of sunlight- Sunlight is a great source of positivity. Scientifically sunlight delivers Vitamin D which is very good for the body and brain. It helps in releasing happy hormone. 30 minutes to 2 hours of sunlight is ideal.

Here’s a suggestion. List out things that you need to do and slowly finish it. Once they are done tick out what’s done. Seeing this will help you in managing stress a lot.

iii) Socialize- Socialize is a great way for taking care of your mental health. Make an effort to speak to people whenever you get the chance.

iv) Do something you love- When was the last time you draw? When was the last time you write or went on a trip? Try to do things that you truly enjoy. Paint, go for walk, watch your favourite TV show. Having friends is important not just for your self-esteem, but also for providing support in times of your need. A study has shown that talking to others for just ten minutes can improve memory and test scores!
